PREFACE

Taken as a whole, this bibliography offers an insight into a number of of the most important trends in recent scholarship. Thus for example, for obvious reasons, less than 10% of the works contained in the previous bibliography concerned the immigration and absorption of Ethiopian Jews. In recent years these have formed the overwhelming majority of all publications. This is particularly reflected in the index where it has become necessary to divide these broad subjects into numerous sub-headings. Similarly, Hebrew language publications have increased from less than 20% of publications in the past to 33% today. While articles aimed at the general public continue to be popular, academic writing has flourished with the completion of over a dozen Ph.D dissertations, important books on liturgy, religion, history and Aliyah and dozens of articles in academic journals.

In choosing items for inclusion in this bibliography, material has been chosen on the basis of subject matter, format and type of publication. Thus articles in daily, weekly or bi-weekly publications have been omitted. Brief discussions of Ethiopian Jews in general books or articles on Judaica, Israel, or Ethiopia have not been included unless they form a distinct subsection of the work in question. Book reviews have been included only of works concerned exclusively or primarily with Ethiopian Jewry. With the exception of theses and dissertations, unpublished materials, internal reports and other archival materials have not been listed. Finally, although there appears to be no end in sight to the current wave of publications and new items continue to appear at a rate of one or two a week, practical constraints have forced us to include only those items published until the end of 1997.

In a departure from the previous bibliography, the order of this bibliography has been vastly simplified. Hebrew items are first listed in alphabetical order according to the author's name (nos. 1-378), followed by items in other languages by author's name. In order to simplify the use of this bibliography, we have numbered the items from the entries 1-932. When there is a reference in the annotation to items that appear in the previous bibliography, the item number appears in parenthesis with a notation that is taken from that volume (960 ראה ק''ב =see Kaplan, and Ben_Dor, 960).

Despite our efforts to make this bibliography as complete as possible, omissions are inevitable. That there have not been more is due in large measure to the assistance we have received in preparing this volume.Ms. Liat Levi accompanied our efforts for more than a year: checking items, contacting researchers, revising annotations and generally assisting in every possible way our attempts to complete this work. Ms. Sharon Agur provided invaluable assistance in the location of hard to find sources, particularly those in the medical sciences. Ms. Risa Weinstein contributed to the early stages of our work locating overlooked items and summarizing previously unread works. Scholars too numerous to mention provided us with information on publications, their own and those of others, which we might have otherwise overlooked.

The Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace provided research facilities and eased the task of repeatedly revising and reprinting earlier drafts of this volume. Numerous libraries and laibrarians in Israel and the United States assisted in our inquiries and helped us locate hard to find items.

מבוא

הביבליוגרפיה בשלמותה מאפשרת לבחון את המגמות העיקריות שהסתמנו בתקופה האחרונה בחקר קבוצה זו. מבין העבודות שנכללו בביבליאוגרפיה הקודמת, עסקו פחות מ-10% בהגירתם של יהודי אתיופיה בישראל ובקליטתם. נושאים אלה עומדים במוקד הכרך שלפנינו, כאשר הרוב הגדול של הפרסומים בשנים האחרונות מוקדשים להם. ממצא תת-נושאים. בדומה לכך,בעבר היוו הפרסומים בעברית פחות מ-20% מכלל הפרסומים בנושא, ואילו כיום הם מהווים כשליש מהם. במקביל למאמרים שנועדו לציבור הרחב, אשר עדיין נפוצים, פרח גם המחקר האקדמי, עם השלמתן של למעלה מתריסר עבודות דוקטור, לצד פרסום ספרים ומאמרים חשובים בנושאי דת, פולחן, היסטוריה, אתנוגרפיה, הגירה וקליטה.

שיקולים של מהות ומסגרת הפירסום הינחו בקביעת הפריטים שייכללו בביליוגרפיה. כיוון שכך לא נכללו בכרך זה מאמרים בכתבי-עת יומיים, שבועיים או דו-שבועיים. דיונים קצרים בנוגע ליהודי אתיופיה, שהופיעו בספרים כללים, נכללו רק אם יהודי אתיופיה היוו חלק ניכר מאותה עבודה. ביקורת ספרות כללה רק את הספר המבוקר, שעניינו יהדות אתיופיה. פרט לעבודות לתואר ''מוסמך'' ועבודות דוקטור, לא נכללו עבודות שלא יצאו לאור, כגון דו''חות פנימיים או חומר ארכיוני. זרם העבודות בנושא אינו פוסק ואנו עדים לפרסומם של פריטים חדשים כל העת. עובדה זו מחייבת לקבוע באופן שרירותי את גבולות מועד הפירסום, והביבליוגרפיה כוללת לפיכך פריטים שפורסמו עד לסוף 1997.

בשונה מן הביבליוגרפיה הקודמת, נערך הקובץ הנוכחי בסדר פשוט יותר. תחילה נמנים הפריטים העבריים בסדר אלפא-ביתי, אף על-פי שם המחבר. כדי לפשט את השימוש בביבליוגרפיה, רשומים הפריטים כ-932-1. בעת התייחסות לעבודות שנתפרסמו בביבליוגרפיה הקודמת, מופיע מספר הפריט בכרך הקודם ולפניו הקיצור ק''ב. לדוגמה: ק''ב 298 = ראה קפלן ובן-דור, 298.

למרות מאמצינו להרכיב ביבליוגרפיה מלאה ככל האפשר, לא ניתן להימנע לחלוטין מטעויות. העובדה שאלה אינן רבות נזקפת לזכות הסיוע הרב שקיבלנו בהכנת כרך זה. גב' ליאת לוי ליוותה את מאמצינו במשך למעלה משנה: היא בדקה פריטים, יצרה קשר עם חוקרים, תיקנה נוסחים ןסייעה בכל דרך אפשרית במאמצינו להשלים את המלאכה. גב' שרון אגור העניקה סיוע רב ערך בגילוי מקורות קשים לאיתור, ובבדיקת פריטים בעיקר מתחום מדעי הרפואה. גב' ריסה וינשטיין תרמה לשלבי העבודה הראשונים באיתור פריטים שנשמטו ובסיכום עבודות שטרם נקראו. אנשי אקדמיה רבים, שלא נוכל לנקוב בשמות כולם, סיפקו מידע שנעלם מעינינו על פרסומיהם או על פרסומי אחרים.

מכון המחקר ע''ש הארי ס' טרומן לקידום השלום סיפק סביבה תומכת וסיוע רב ערך הן בשלבי איסוף החומר והמחקר והן בשלבי העריכה וההדפסה של הטיוטות המוקדמות. ספריות וספרנים רבים בישראל ובארצות-הברית סייעו בעבודת התחקיר ועוזרו לנו למצוא פריטים שקשה לאתרם.
